Glycerol triacetate palletizing
Category:
Description:
The molecular formula of triacetin is C. 9 H 14 O 6 Its CAS number is 102-76-1. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a faint fruity aroma and a sweet, meat-like scent; at low concentrations, it exhibits a bitter taste. It can be used in cosmetic fragrance formulations, primarily as a fixative.
Production process of triacetin:
1. It is obtained by esterifying glycerol with acetic acid. First, glycerol is preheated to 50–60℃, then acetic acid, benzene, and sulfuric acid are added. The mixture is heated and stirred under reflux to remove water. After dehydration is complete, the benzene is recovered, and acetic anhydride is added. The mixture is heated for 4 hours. After cooling, the pH is adjusted to 7 using a 5% sodium carbonate solution. The aqueous layer is separated, and the crude oil is dried over calcium chloride. Finally, the product is subjected to vacuum distillation, and the fraction collected at 128–131℃ (0.93 kPa) is glycerol triacetate.
2. It is obtained by esterifying acetic anhydride with hot glycerol followed by purification via vacuum distillation.
3. A method for preparing triacetin, comprising the following steps:
Step (1): Mix concentrated sulfuric acid and activated carbon with a pH of 1 at a mass ratio of 1:(0.5–2). Stir the mixture and heat it up to 150℃–190℃, then hold the temperature for 10–30 minutes. After naturally cooling down, allow the mixture to stand at room temperature to obtain the catalyst.
Step (2): Mix the catalyst prepared in Step (1) with glycerol, acetic acid, and a dehydrating agent, then heat the mixture to 100℃–150℃ for reaction. After processing, triacetin is obtained. The volume-to-mass ratio of glycerol to catalyst is 1:(0.004–0.10). The preparation method provided by this invention employs a novel catalytic reaction, reducing the esterification time by approximately 10 hours, thereby saving energy and lowering costs. Compared to using concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst, the use of the new catalyst results in fewer side-reaction polymerization products, increasing the product purity from 98.0%–99.0% to over 99.7%.
Applications of glycerol triacetate:
Triacetin is a plasticizer that can be used in industries such as plastics, tobacco, food, pharmaceuticals, inks, dyes, cosmetics, and casting.
1. Plasticizer
Currently, phthalate plasticizers—primarily those based on the toxic di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP)—dominate industrial applications, accounting for approximately 80% of total plasticizer production.
2. Cigarette filter adhesive
Glycerol triacetate is primarily used in the tobacco industry as an adhesive in cigarette filters, where it acts as a plasticizer and curing agent. When used to plasticize acetate fiber for cigarette filters, glycerol triacetate provides excellent elasticity, breathability, and appropriate hardness.
3. Other applications
In recent years, numerous reports have highlighted new applications for glycerol triacetate: as a food additive, it can increase the volume of foods by up to 75%; as a gasoline additive, it can reduce lead emissions into the air; and as an anti-corrosion lining additive, it exhibits exceptional resistance to hydrocarbons.
