Diacetin (also known as glycerol diacetate) is a polyol ester compound with excellent compatibility, possessing properties that serve as both a solvent, plasticizer, and emulsifier. It is widely used in various fields including food, pharmaceuticals, daily chemicals, and plastics. Specific applications are as follows:
Food industry

As a food additive, it can serve as an emulsifier, plasticizer, and carrier solvent. It is commonly used in the production of soft candies, chocolate coatings, and baked goods, where it helps enhance the flexibility and texture of foods and prevents products from drying out and cracking. It can also act as a solvent for flavors and colorants, facilitating the even dispersion of aromas and colors throughout the food matrix.

Used to produce edible films (such as food packaging films), it enhances the film’s flexibility and extensibility while maintaining excellent oxygen-barrier properties, thereby extending the shelf life of food products.
Pharmaceutical industry

It can serve as a matrix ingredient in topical formulations such as ointments and creams, facilitating the localized penetration and absorption of active ingredients.
Daily Chemicals and Cosmetics Industry

Used in skincare products, shampoos, body washes, and other formulations, it serves as an emollient and emulsifying stabilizer, enhancing the product’s moisturizing properties while preventing oil-water separation and maintaining system stability.

In cosmetics such as lipsticks and mascaras, it can serve as a plasticizer, enhancing the product’s flexibility and preventing the makeup from cracking due to drying.
Plastics and Packaging Industry

As a plasticizer, it is used in the processing of plastics such as cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate, replacing some traditional plasticizers. It is commonly employed in the production of transparent plastic films, sheets, and molded products.

The solvent used for preparing water-based inks boasts low VOC emissions, meets the requirements of printing processes, and produces prints with uniform color and strong adhesion.
Other industrial sectors

In the textile industry, as a fabric softener, it enhances the hand feel of fabrics and reduces fiber fuzzing and pilling.
